Today, we went up to L.A. for Riley's Pre-Op appointment. When we got there, the doctor immediately did a physical check up on him and determined that he was healthy enough for surgery! The doctor WAS concerned, though, about the bulge on the top of his head...where his "soft spot" is. If you follow this blog, you would know that I was worried about this area of Riley's head months ago, and his pediatrician told me it was nothing to worry about. One of the surgeons ordered a CT scan and will call us with the results on Monday. He said he is concerned that it might be fluid on the brain. He said that's probably not the case...Riley's acting perfectly healthy, but he wants to do a CT scan any way.
After that, we took Riley down to the lab where they had to draw blood. I thought this would be an easy in and out procedure...and well...19 pricks later...seriously...19. (They couldn't find the vein), I had to ask Steve to hold Riley down, because I couldn't stand there anymore holding him down as he stared into my eyes SCREAMING while the nurse wiggled a needle back and forth in his arm trying to find a vein! A little traumatic for momma to say the least! GGGRRRRHHHH. Something I'll never be able to erase from my memory!
Between needles and xrays, Riley had quite the day!
We also learned that the surgery will be a little over 3 hours long, and that he'll need at least two blood transfusions during this time.
Seems like we're "all systems go" for now. That is...if Riley stays healthy. Steve and I are both pretty sick, and Riley has a cough and runny nose tonight. PLEASE pray that he keeps healthy.
Thanks to all who called to check on us today. I've been really bad at returning phone calls lately. But please know that your care and concern means a TON!
Riley's Diagnosis
Riley James Faiai is my 2 year old son who was born with Craniosynostosis and probable Pfeiffer syndrome. When he was 5 months old, Riley had surgery to reconstruct his skull. This blog is the journal, story, and timeline that has helped me put Riley's Journey into words.
